Fertility Service
The fertility Service at Wirral Women and Children’s provides initial investigation and treatment of infertile couples. IVF services are provided by the Hewitt Centre, Liverpool Women’s Hospital.
Services Available:
Wirral Women and Children’s Hospital Fertility Clinic provides a consultant delivered service for the investigation and treatment of couples with fertility problems. Our aim is to complete investigations in a prompt and timely manner so treatment can start within 6 weeks of initial consultation.
The following services are provided;
- Full fertility investigations (female and male)
- Lifestyle and pre-pregnancy advice
- Polycystic ovarian syndrome management
- Ovulation induction monitoring
- Ovarian reserve testing
- Investiagtion of recurrent miscarriage
- Intrauterine insemination
- Counselling and support
Our team of highly skilled laparoscopic surgeons can carry out procedures such as fibroid removal, excision of adhesions or excision of endomteriosis.
Routine Investigations:
Couples are usually seen together and basic investigations may include blood tests, pelvic ultrasound and semenalysis.
More advanced investigations may include:
- HyCoSy – ultrasound examination with contrast medium to examine the uterine cavity and fallopian tubes
- HSG – xray examination with contrast medium to examine the uterine cavity and fallopian tubes
- Ultrasound examination for ovulation (follicle tracking)
- Laparoscopy and Dye – a keyhole operation to examine the abdominal cavity and fallopian tubes
- Hysteroscopy – a telescope examination of the inside of the uterus. This can be performed in outpatients where small fibroids or polyps can be removed and usually does not need an anaesthetic
- Investigations for male fertility problems are supportedby our colleagues in the urology department.
Appointments:
Mr Mike Ellard is the clinical lead for the fertility service and runs a weekly out-patient clinic. Other consultants have an interest in subfertility and may also see patients in their general clinics.
Patients should be referred by their GP via choose and book or directly to Mr Ellard.

Moday to Friday 8.00am to 5.00pm
Where are we based?:
Out-patient clinics are held on the ground floor of the Wirral Women and Children’s Hospital.
Fertility investigations such as pelvic ultrasound and HyCoSy are carried out in the Gynaecology Treatment Centre on the first floor of the Wirral Women and Children’s Hospital.
HSG examinations are carried out in the x-ray department on the ground floor of the main hospital.
