Infection Control

Did you know.....?

Our commitment to eradicating hospital-acquired infections means that we have a low rate of MRSA. At Clatterbridge Hospital’s surgical and orthopaedic unit where most patients undergo their planned operations, we consistently have no cases of MRSA.

Wirral University Teaching Hospital has a strong track record of tackling hospital-acquired infections, such as MRSA, and it remains one of the organisation’s highest priorities. Three recent independent reports have all confirmed that patients have a very high level of confidence in standards of cleanliness at the Trust.

The Trust remains committed to the national NHS MRSA Improvement Programme and is part of its performance improvement network (PIN). The voluntary network meets four times a year and is open to all Trusts for sharing learning and spreading good practice.

Factfile

  • The Trust consistently achieves the maximum green status from the Department of Health's Patient Environment Action Team (PEAT) which reviews standards of hospital cleanliness.
  • Staff have mandatory infection control training once a year.
  • The Trust's twelve modern matrons and numerous infection control link staff help to enforce strict working practices in wards and departments.
  • Alcohol hand rub has been placed at every bedside and is carried by members of staff to use before and after treating any patients.
  • Hand hygiene stations are also positioned at the entrance to every ward.
  • Patients are encouraged to ask both visitors and nursing staff to use the hand rub.

NB: MRSA is not a 'superbug' - while it is resistant to Methicillin, it can be killed off by other antibiotics.
