Clatterbridge Hospital

Entrance of Clatterbridge HospitalThe majority of planned (elective) operations are carried out at Clatterbridge. Patients benefit from the use of increasingly sophisticated surgical techniques, which has led to better outcomes and shorter hospital stays. Increasingly, operations do not require the patient to make an overnight stay in hospital. The surgical and orthopaedic unit consistently has a zero rate of MRSA.

Most patients will have attended the hospital’s pre assessment unit. Here they are seen by a nurse and a doctor. Routine investigations like blood testing, x-rays, heart tracing (ECGs) and an examination are undertaken. The patients also have the opportunity to talk to staff about their particular problems. The pre-assessment process means that hospital beds can be used more efficiently; in most cases patients can be admitted to the ward on the day scheduled for their procedure.

Innovations based on patients’ feedback and evaluations means that procedures are continuously under review. Recent improvements to the Day Surgery Unit include:

  • staggered admission times for patients receiving a local anaesthetic. This means a shorter wait before being admitted to theatre
  • a dedicated nurse for all patients throughout their stay
  • the separation of facilities into single sex areas, as patients generally feel more comfortable with this
  • a telephone progress check for all patients 24 hours after they have left the unit

Clatterbridge is also the main base of the Dermatology Department which has its main outpatient department, ward and daycase facilities on the site.

The vast majority of dermatological surgery is carried out at Clatterbridge hospital in the departments own operating theatres. As is the case for surgery and orthopaedics, the department has a zero rate of MRSA and C Difficile.
