Accessible Environments

As a large hospital we provide many services and we need to make sure that we make reasonable adjustments to ensure that our policies, practices and procedures include the Patient in a wheelchairneeds of people with disabilities. This includes both patients and staff.

The Trust has to provide auxiliary aids and services to enable a person with a disability to make use of our services. For example, for patients with a hearing disability, we can provide a portable hearing loop for use during consultation with a doctor.

We have to ensure that our environments are fully accessible to people with disabilities so there are automatic doors to all entrances at the hospital.

Wirral University Teaching Hospital is positive about employing people with disabilities. We are a two tick symbol user which means that we guarantee to interview any person with a disability applying for a job who meets the minimum criteria.

If you are coming to hospital and you have an existing disability, you may wish to contact the Disability Advisor to discuss any concerns about your admission or appointment at the hospital.

The Disability Adviser is currently available
Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9.15 - 3.15.
Telephone: 0151 678 5111 ext 2869

The Disability Advisory Service is involved in:

  • Disability Awareness training for all the staff
  • Auditing the environment of the hospital to ensure that the needs of people with disabilities are included in the design.
  • Liaising with specialist services in the community to ensure best practice
  • Working closely with disability groups to ensure representation within acute hospital services.
