Introduction
The Integrated Library Service subscribes to a number of:
Print journals - sometimes referred to as ‘paper copies’ or ‘hard copies’.
Electronic journals - sometimes referred to as ‘e-journals’ or ‘online journals’.
Print journals
Print journals, depending on the subject they cover, are distributed across our two site libraries, the McArdle Library and John A. Aitken Library. To view a complete A-Z list of print journals and the location at which they are held please link here. Additionally, details of our print journals are available on the Library Catalogue.
Finding print journals in the library
All the journals are shelved in alphabetical order of the journal title. The most recent journal issues can be located in the current journal section, with the latest issue of the journal displayed on the front of the shelf; previous issues from the current year are stored underneath the shelf. Journals previous to the current year are bound and shelved separately. Some older journals are kept in storage. Please ask library staff if you cannot find the journal you are looking for.
Electronic journals
An electronic journal is a full-text journal that is published on the Internet. Electronic journals provide the benefits of 24/7 availability and allow you to read the journal without visiting the library in person.
NHS staff and students on placement have access to a wide range of full text electronic journals via NHS Evidence (formerly the National Library for Health).
You will need to be logged in with your NHS Athens username and password to access all electronic journals. For help with registering for an NHS Athens account, please see Library Helpsheet No. 1: Creating and using an NHS Athens account.
For help with navigating all your free NHS resources, please use our series of Library Helpsheets.
Finding the electronic journal article you require
When navigating electronic journals, you will normally be directed to a list of issues for that particular journal. When you select the journal issue you require you will be taken a table of contents for that issue. When you find the article you want, we would recommend that you view the PDF (Portable Document Format) of the article.
