Simulation

Simulation

Wirral University Teaching Hospital has its own state of the art Simulation Suite. This has been designed to provide multi-professional simulation based education.

Simulation is a fairly new concept for the health care profession but has been used in the aviation industry for more than 40 years. Airline pilots have undertaken training focusing on non technical skills (human factors) as well as the technical aspects of safely flying a plane.

Patient safety is compromised sometimes through lack of knowledge or skills but more commonly by human factors. Team Resource Management is a tool that can be taught to try to reduce risk of error but it is something that is very difficult to teach in the classroom.

Team Resource Management has several key elements; Communication, Leadership, Followership, Situational Awareness, Distribution of workload, Error recognition and Utilisation of Resources.

Simulation based education allows the learners to be immersed in ‘real-life’ scenarios which is filmed and then played back to the candidates. This gives the learner the opportunity to observe and discuss their role within the scenario with the support of a qualified Team Resource Management instructor. They can highlight both positive and negative aspects of their behaviour and discuss amongst the group ways of doing things differently next time.

The Clinical Skills Centre does recognise that some staff may feel reluctant to take part in Simulation based education due to the nature of the course and/or the filming involved. We do, however ensure confidentiality of all of our learners and offer reassurance and support throughout. Therefore, it is hoped that by the end of the session the group will have had a beneficial and insightful experience to take back with them to their clinical area.

Simulation Exercise

The Simulation Suite hosts two medium fidelity manikins Sim Baby and Sim Man pictured above enabling us to provide courses for both adult and paediatric staff. We are gathering together a large faculty of staff to assist with the planning and implementation of these courses including medical staff, physiotherapists, advanced nurse practitioners and staff from theatres and critical care. Anyone with an interest in Simulation based education who would like to know more – please contact Justine Brislen, Clinical Skills Facilitator ext: 2671 / 2213 or e-mail Justinebrislen@nhs.netASPIH logo
