Education and Training Practice

We are responsible for comprehensive orientation using a competency-based approach.
Induction to the unit which includes;

  • Teaching sessionOne week’s orientation working with ourselves which incorporates all aspects relating to critical care
  • Percutaneous tracheostomy education
  • Haemofiltration education
  • Oxygen therapy circuits education to include; Drager systems, CPAP hoods and nasal high flow oxygen.
  • Continuous Veno Venous Haemofiltration and plasma exchange education
  • Theory related to practice e.g., care bundles, latest evidence based research and audits education guided by the critical Care Network
  • An orientation package is provided and designated mentorship occurs following the induction week for a total of four weeks, (based upon the individual nurses critical care experience.) There after the nurse is clinically supervised by the team leaders and us
  • Staff are assessed at regular intervals using a multiple choice assessment method, to ensure that they have the necessary advanced level of knowledge working with Benner’s novice to expert taxonomy framework

Study Days

These are held throughout the year for all members of staff, depending on their individual needs or training needs of the unit with regard to new equipment.

Teaching

Teaching is varied throughout the unit and within the hospital, some examples are:

  • An introduction into critical care within the school of nursing for students prior to their placement is given by ourselves
  • Clinical skills sessions relating to infection control
  • Modular teaching on postgraduate courses
  • In-house training for all staff
  • ALERT course.
