Special Surgery
Special Surgery comprises five specialties – Dermatology; Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT); Maxillofacial Surgery; Ophthalmology and Orthodontics.
The Dermatology Unit is based at Clatterbridge Hospital. The unit comprises a dedicated dermatology in-patient/day case ward of 12 beds and outpatient/treatment clinic facilities. There are two Consultant Dermatologists – Dr. S.K. Jones and Dr. S.I. White – who are supported by an Associate Specialist (Dr. S. Welsh), a staff grade doctor (Dr T Bussey), visiting Clinical Assistants and junior doctors in training as well as specially trained nursing staff. Outpatient clinics are held at Arrowe Park and Victoria Central Hospitals.
The ENT Department is based at Arrowe Park Hospital though outpatient clinics are held at Clatterbridge, Victoria Central, St. Catherine’s and Ellesmere Port Hospitals. Although many patients are treated as day cases on the Surgical Division Day Case Unit at Arrowe Park, ENT, Maxillofacial Surgery and Ophthalmology share an inpatient ward of 12 beds. There are three Consultant ENT Surgeons – Mr. G. O’Sullivan (who is also Clinical Head of Division), Mr. I.W. Sherman and Mr. V.R. Srinivasan. An Associate Specialist (Dr. N. Shehata), supporting junior medical staff and ENT trained nursing staff complete the team. The Audiology Department has close links with ENT though also offers a direct access hearing aid service to Wirral GPs.
Maxillofacial Surgery and Orthodontics share a purpose-built unit at Arrowe Park Hospital. Dental nursing staff, a laboratory technician and junior doctors provide support to Mr. D.C. Jones, Consultant Maxillofacial Surgeon, and Mr. G.R.P. Barry, Consultant Orthodontist. There are close links with the specialist Maxillofacial Unit at Aintree University Hospitals. There is currently a vacant Consultant Maxillofacial Surgeon post.
Ophthalmology is based at Arrowe Park Hospital and has a dedicated outpatients department. There are five Consultant Ophthalmologists – Mr. L.G. Clearkin, Mrs. P.M. Pennefather, Mr. V. Kumar, Mr. S.D. Prasad (also Clinical Director) and Mr. M.T. Watts – and two Associate Specialists – Mr. F. Ali and Dr. Y.G. Patwalla. Optometrists, Orthoptists, ophthalmic trained nurses, clinical assistants and junior doctors in training complete the team.
