General Surgery and Urology Directorate
General Surgery and Urology Directorate form part of the Surgical Division and comprises of the following sub specialities:
- Breast Surgery
- Colorectal Surgery.
- Upper Gastro Intestinal Surgery
- Vascular
- Urology
The directorate management structure comprises of a Clinical Service lead for:
- Breast Surgery
- GI Services
- Vascular
- Urology
Supported by a Directorate Manager, Matron, Deputy Directorate Manager and Senior Business Support Manager.
The General Surgery and Urology Directorate offers a comprehensive and integrated service for all patients, aiming to promote the highest possible range and standards of care for patients requiring surgery.
The directorate provides a full range of outpatient, inpatient and day case services, both at Arrowe Park Hospital and Clatterbridge Hospital, with some outpatient services provided at Victoria Central. There are plans to develop out patient services at St Catherine’s in the near future.
The directorate undertakes the following clinical activity per year.
- 14,400 new out patient appointments.
- 21,200 follow up out patient appointments
- 8,700 elective surgical procedures
- 4,500 Endoscopic procedures
- 7,500 Emergency procedures
The surgical clinical services are supported by specialist nurses, who provide a range of nurse led services, that include:
- Clinic support
- Diagnostics/investigations
- Ward support
- Macmillan support
Specialist nurses employed within the division include:
- Endoscopy Nurse
- Breast Care nurses
- Urology Nurses
- Upper Gastrointestinal / Hepatobiliary Nurse
- Colorectal
- Stoma care
- Lymphodema
- Vascular
The directorate also manages the Wirral Limb Centre, that provides a regional service for amputee patients.

GI Services - This service embraces both Colorectal and Upper gastro-intestinal Surgery. Colorectal services are provided by 4 Consultant surgeons:
